Ideas for Promoting Your Hubs
74Promoting On the HubPages Site
I will start this Hub by saying that Paul Edmondson and his team at HubPages have done, and continue to do, a fine job of promoting HubPages as a whole and have been very successful at drawing a large amount of traffic to the HubPages site.
In addition to promoting the site, he and his team have also done a great job of building a site that has attracted and continues to attract thousands of excellent writers.
People are attracted to web sites that offer them useful information and which entertain them. Ideally, web visitors should be provided with useful information that is presented in an entertaining manner.
Start by Writing & Posting a Number of Good Hubs
This site has an abundance articles that are both informative and entertaining, and, having just read a few of your hubs, I would certainly include them in this category.
All of the things discussed above serve to draw large numbers of visitors to HubPages each day. Of course the question is, how do you get a chunk of that traffic?
Since your profile as of this writing (June 2008) states that you joined a mere two months ago, you probably have not had time to produce a large number of hubs yet.
I joined in October of 2006 and it took me until the end of January 2007 to generate enough Google AdSense revenue (U.S. $100 is the minimum amount your account needs to reach in order to have the money sent) to receive a check in February 2007.
I put other things aside and did a considerable amount of writing in the first few months and by the summer of 2007 had published about 270+ Hubs.
I was then forced to cut back on the writing due to work and family responsibilities. However, since February of 2007 my hubs have consistently generated enough revenue to get paid monthly from Google (I am currently earning about twice as much per month now as I was in the summer of 2007).
In addition to good writing and a large and growing number of hubs, consistence is also important. I believe in one of the Hub Forums, Paul Edmondson commented that publishing three articles a week is a good number in order to generate readership volume on HubPages or any other site.
In the Fall of 2006 HubPages ran a contest in which writers had to write Hubs on topics they chose from a list of topics requested by readers. I entered it and published one or more articles practically every day and saw my hits and AdSense volume jump during that period.
I did the same thing when they ran a similar contest this past February and March where you had 24 hours to publish up to five Hubs on the day's topic. My hits and revenue rose with my increased activity. In addition to forcing me to generate more volume quickly, these contests also forced me to broaden the range of topics that I wrote on (I should point out that some of my Hubs with the highest scores were written for these contests).
While having a good and growing base of high quality Hubs is important, direct promotion is necessary as well. The first thing you can do to promote your Hubs is to join other Hubber's fan clubs.
This lets them get to know you and most will at least check out some of your hubs. Once they have seen you, many will join your fan club and will usually start receiving automatic emails every time you publish a new Hub (they can, of course, turn this feature off, but many don't). This also drives traffic to your Hubs and causes Google to push your rankings up in their searches.
In addition, you can visit other people's Hubs and leave intelligent and relevant comments on those that you like. This automatically creates a link back to your profile that anyone, Hubber or outsider, can click on and go to your Hubs. You can also put a direct link to a specific Hub of yours if it is relevant. If done correctly, this can attract visitors from that Hub to your Hubs.

Promoting Outside of the HubPages Site
Next, move outside and begin promoting outside of HubPages. If you click on the Share It link that automatically appears at the bottom of each Hub you publish you can choose from a number of link sharing sites where you can post links with comments to that Hub.
I currently use Digg, Del.icio.us, Facebook, Reddit, Stumble Upon and Xomba all of which I have opened accounts with. With Digg and Del.icio.us not only can other members of these sites see your link, but the link and your comments will often be picked up by search engines as well, thereby bringing still more people to the link and giving them the opportunity to see and click to go to your Hub.
All of these sites and others have fan and friend features which you can use to help to further promote your Hub. Facebook is becoming popular with college students and professionals making it more that just a teenage vanity site. It also includes among its numerous communities at least two HubPage communities along with other professional communities.
Linkedin.com is another professional networking site which allows you to include links to a website and blog with your profile. I have a link to my HubPage profile on my Linkedin profile page. The Share It button also has a link where you can download addresses from your email account and notify your friends outside of HubPages when you publish a new Hub. I use this when I want to send a link to a new Hub to family and friends who I feel would be interested in that topic.
MyLot is another social networking site which is free to join and members are encouraged to start discussions of their own as well as join in discussions started by others. The site shares AdSense Revenue but collects and disburses the revenue themselves (I believe the minimum payout is $10).
I never made much money with it and, as a result, don't post regularly. However, the site does allow you to post a link to your website on your profile and this link can be to your profile on HubPages. Unlike many other sites, it also allows you to post links in your comments and discussions.
You have to be careful to not do this too often and to make sure the link is relevant to the discussion and your comment. Because I have a large number of Hubs on various topics I can often include a link in a comment to a relevant Hub of mine.
Another site that I write for occasionally is BlogEvolve which, like HubPages, shares AdSense revenue in the same manner as HubPages. The site allows links and I frequently write articles on a similar theme as some of my HubPage articles and link to the appropriate Hubs.
Of course, I don't simply publish the same article that I published on HubPages but write something new and different that I can somehow connect to one or more HubPages on the same topic (for instance, I wrote one on Irish in the American Revolution and in it I mentioned Charles Carroll of Carrollton and linked his name in that article to the article on HubPages that I wrote about him).
There are also sites that provide you with your own blog for free and allow you to run Google Ads on the blog (with you usually keeping 100% of the revenue rather than sharing it with them). I have two blogs with Google's Blogger.com which I write for as time permits and try to include links in my articles to my Hubs. While these two blogs along with BlogEvolve rarely generate more than about 5% or less of my monthly AdSense revenue (with HubPages generating about 95% of my monthly AdSense revenue) they do provide me with opportunities to promote my HubPage articles.
Finally, when you are linking to HubPages from outside sources, be sure to include a referral tracker (click on the "My Account" tab at the top of you HubPages and, in the bottom half of the gray box that appears in the middle at the top of the page click on "URL Trackers").
The referral trackers allow you to insert a code into your HubPages link which will then give you credit whenever the person clicking on the link joins HubPages and begins producing Hubs themselves.
You will receive a percentage of the revenue that that person receives when people click on the Google, Amazon and eBay ads on their pages (the revenue you get comes from HubPages portion of the revenue generated and not from the writer's portion). In addition to attracting new Hubbers and adding to your income you can also use the referral to monitor where your referral traffic is coming from. This involves the use of different trackers for different referral sources.
Due to time constraints, the majority of my efforts have been on writing and publishing Hubs so my promotions have not been as extensive as those of other Hubbers. Hopefully other Hubbers will add more suggestions and sites for promoting Hubs in the comments section below

I have to go back and write down some of the information that is provided here. However, more than one hubber mentions a site called She Told Me So which is not the real name. The site is She Told Me. Also, She Told Me does not allow you to do anything on it for free other than open an account. Before you post an article, a link, etc, you have to pay through your Pay Pal Account first. It would be nice if we are told this in articles that boast about using them.
great hub, i really liked the idea
Great hub! Thanks for taking time to write such a helpful hub.
An awesome informative hub!Thank you for all the great information.
I am new to Hubpages and need all the advice I can get. Your Hub tips are great.

Chuck, thanks for writing such a useful and informative hub. I agree with Paul that your writing style is very engaging and easy to follow. Great writers are able to create content that flows seamlessly from start to finish. Having read several of your hubs, I think it's safe to say that your writing is truly great. Well done!
these tips are oh-so helpful and as a newbie here I am eating them up! Thanks so much for sharing your insight and experience!
nice article...
Brilliant hub ! :-)
Hi sir, i am thankful for the information. Really your writing on hub pages indicates persistence and patience combined with experimentation. Thanks again for the hub :-).
Nice! I'm very new here so this is quite helpful. Hopefully I can figure out how to bookmark this hub...
Still very new to Hubpages and thanks for your good pointers.
Thanks, Chuck... Very informative hub. :)
Thanks for the useful info. and sites - promotion is an ongoing and never-ending process I find !
Hi just started out on hubpages. Sounds like some good information!!! Thanks!
Your hub keeps me motivated, which being a new hubber is needed. I am still trying to find my niche.
i iam realy enjoy this article this was one of the effective information i need i thank you for publish this type of article for helping people iam now one of your fan thanks
Thanks Chuck...really useful, easy to read article. Lots of info for newbie Hubbers - like myself. When you get a chance do you fancy writing an article on Time Management - thats my weakness - getting distracted from sitting down and writing. Must say, I am more disciplines since joining Hub - esp. responding to requests - they make it easier for me to focus and write. thx and Be Well. Ntathu
i like you the tips you have here. They are very great. Thanks for the information.
Such tips are most wellcome for freshers. Good and informative reading.
Thank you so much for the great idea Chuck! I will surely keep them all in mind!
Hope you'll post more of these tips again!
Jenny
Thanks for the great info!
Good information. Since I write so much I have been thinking along the lines of getting paid for my work. I have seen the ads for these types of income but I have not explored them further due to two things.
One being times constraints as I have a website and business as well as working for a non-profit foundation. The other was not knowing how the system worked. You have given me a good general idea of how it does.
Thank you!
Excellent hub. Thanks for sharing.
Alright! I'm your 400th! :)
Hey I enjoyed reading your hub and appreciate all the nice info! Of course having multiple blogs might be too much for me to handle at the moment. Also, I took one look at mylot and noticed it was dead and that not even long term members log on there anymore. Also it says you have 399 fans so I guess I'll try and be your 400th! :) Thanks for everything!

great hub
Nice Hub Chuck! These are some wonderful ideas that I will definitely implement in my hub marketing strategies.
Thank you for the valuable information after reading your article I joined linkedin and now I have linked it to HubPages. I sincerely appreciate your wonderful information. Great Article , I give a thumbs up.
Hi Chuck, While I have been writing for quite some time, mostly on the corporate scene, blogging is a new world to me. I am finding that I enjoy it very much. Thanks for your article. I learned quite a bit, and will probably refer to it often. There is much to learn!
Thank you very much for the early days income curve, Chuck. Seems everybody else writes about the income after they have over 100 hubs.
I favorited the directories, Learn And Know. Everybody's right about style, although I will slog through a poorly written piece if I think its useful to me.
There's a common article writing or usfreeads monetization scheme where you drive traffic to a salespage from a clickbank vendor that you're affiliated with. An interesting twist might be to funnel traffic from one or more of those sites thru a hub page, or vice-versa.
In the end, it all comes down to shrewdly chosen keywords and making sure they're the clickable text in any links to any of your pages or hubs. Especially the title and web address.
Since I just joined a couple months ago, I found this hub helpful. The 3 hubs a week idea provides me with a specific number to publish, and it's reasonable. Thanks! Julie
thanks !!! good work!!!many people talked about this news on the forum on tall dating site ___Tallmingle.com__,seems it is a break news there.
Wow! What a motivational ariticle to get me writing. Hah! I wrote one Hub and is it ever lonely. Time to hit the keyboard and submit content.
Chuck, thanks for sharing about your revenue and the tips on how to build income. I had been wondering how long it would take before building any revenue so your hub was really informative. I'll just keep writing! Thanks again.
Hey! Thanks so much for the tips. I am also fairly new at this hub business but I have been writing web articles for over 2 years. It is a rough world out there and it is very hard to make a living at writing but it can be done with a little persistence, a lot of patience, and a strong will to succeed at it.
Excellent info.. Thanks.
This is a great hub - just what I was looking for! :) I'm always looking for new ways to promote my hubs and I can take this advice and apply it to other things such as my blog.
Thank you for this information and even though this is only my first day on hubpages, I will work hard on following your advice so that I too can get monthly checks from google.
I use StumbleUponto promote my hubs! you guys should try it too. Read more about stumbleupon on my hub: http://hubpages.com/hub/StumbleUpon/
Great Hub with loads of good advice - Another way to get good quality links to your hub is to make a video and post it to the video sites with a text link back to your hub in the description!
Thanks again
Thanks for great info. Please visit all of my Hubs.
Hey Chuck -- this is great information and taught this ol' gal a few things....and they said it couldn't be done. ..." The referral trackers allow you to insert a code into your HubPages link which will then give you credit whenever the person clicking on the link joins HubPages and begins producing Hubs themselves"
I didn't know how to do that! thanks!@! I'm a fan....Marisue
Fantastic article and thank you fo the tips as if it wasn't for writers like yourself we would be lost.
Very insightful tips. Good reminder that its just as important to get traffic to your hub from outside hubpages, as it is trying to get traffice from within hubpages
Great information, thank you so much. I am also a fairly new Hubber. I recognize that I need much more content. I learned a few "tricks" from you, but I also see that I don't need to constrain my writing to a single subject, but might even be better off by diversifying. Thanks Again.
Great article, thx for sharing these tips!
Hi Chuck!
I'm a newbie here and still dont know what to do.
Thanks for some really useful marketing information.
Just showing some love... I am new to hub pages, but these techniques do with with my Squidoo lenses. For best results, be "social" don't post links just for traffic, but go read and rate other pages too.
Chuck,
Thank you for your marketing advice on how to promote your Hubs. These tips are really very helpful for a "newbie" such as myself. I do like you style!
Chuck, thank you for all that valuable tips. The web 2.0 strategies I already employ. But linking from one blog to another is one that I'll have to try. Once again great hub and thank you.
Thanks for this hub....I, too, joined in two months ago and know I have to be patient to start seeing any income....but I love writing, and have lots of different interests...so am hoping Hubpages a good place for me. Thanks again for the hub, and all the comments that help as well. BEST to all "stylish" writers...may I be included in those ranks some day!
Thanks for the informative post! I don't actually write for adsense income, but your post has great suggestions from an SEO, and a common sense, stantpoint. I've actually bookmarked this page to come back to because it has a lot of great information I need to put to use in my practices.
Thumbs up!
You can get free links from two directories that update almost every hour
one is http://besthubpages.com and the other one is http://hubsdirectory.com .
You will listed automatclly in bith directories and earn backlink, the only thing you can do it write a good hub that will rank top in hubpages.
hats off for writing such informative hub.....
Hi Chuck, this hub is a valuable source for new people to hubpages and us older models lol, it is a great reminder that if you want to make a buck or 2 you do have to put some work in to it, The comment thread has thrown up some interesting discussion and if you can read between the lines there is some valuable advice there. I even get a mention lol, Paul I agree with you 100% style plays a big part of it and my writing style does let me down a little, I try to write as if I am talking to a friend rather than taking a formal approach.
Robin and Chuck have a more evolved style of writing that I would love to be able to master, Patty inglish also shares the same qualities in her writing, it is a friendly but formal style they tell a story in a way that is easy to read, and as you are enjoying reading through them you are learning new facts without realising that you are.........jimmy
P.S Robin thanks for sticking up for me, but what Paul said above is somethig I have known for a long time, but the way I write is who I am and i would find it difficult to change either lol.
Really great hub - learnt loads and will take your advice
Thank you !
Thanks for info nice hub
Thanks your hub is very informative.
Thank you for nice information.
Hi Chuck,
I must appreciate how your hubs have being inspiring and helpful to me, this one is a plus. Thanks for sharing.
Excennelt Ideas . Thanks !
This was awesome information. Even the comments have been awesome and informative. Makes me realize that I have so much to learn about this stuff. But when I find articles like this one at least I see that the information is out there and well put. It's kind of like eating a wedding cake by yourself: you could do it, but it ain't gonna happen in just one sitting. Thanks again, very helpful.
Good information, Chuck, and interesting comments. The information on social sites and links is particularly helpful.
Very helpful information, beautifully written. Now if I can just find that time to produce those three hubs a week! Regards, ST.
Yes I think style is an important element, as you say in one of your comment responses.
Take care
David
Every time I read a good article like this about Hub promotion, I learn something. Thanks Chuck.
great great article, definitely helps out and its great to have this information, thank you!
Chuck-
Great Hub. Very helpful and easy to follow writinf style. I always appreciate those who write in PLAIN English and still give great content.
Thanks- Dan
Thanks for the info - I look forward to more in the future
Excellent linking and marketing tips, thanks! DIdn't know about all those ;)
Another practical and timely hub. Thanks.
Thank you for all the helpful information. This is a great hub!
One thing that just occured to me is that you and Robin are both trained educators. The point of a good Hub is to educate. Perhaps there is something in your training that has tought you how to present information in an easy to understand way.
Also, you are both highly educated. I'd love to run some analysis correlating traffic to profession and education levels. Too bad we don't collect this data.
Side note. Robin gave me an ear full about commenting on Jimmy. I love Jimmy's Hubs and he's a great part of the community here. Knowing Jimmy, he's probably laughing:)
Yikes, double posted, sorry. Thumbs up again, though. :)
Amazing article on hubpages, blogging and advertsing etc. So helpful and infromative, a very easy read. Really enjoyed it, thanks for taking the time to tell your story and show a "newbie" like me, the ropes!
Thanks for all this information. At least 3 articles a week? Oh boy. :) I agree with Paul, in the end, people will really go back for more if they like the way it was written! Wow, way to go chuck and robin!
Chuck, We have extensively analyzed Hubs and authors at HubPages to see if we could come up with concrete requirements of how to write Hubs that generate traffic. We looked at things like length, originality, images, number of links and videos. In short we found that longer pieces of content, with a few links, and a couple pictures or videos were the best combination. The harder thing to quantify was how useful the content was, so that's when we started looking at topics.
While we never formally measured how niche a piece of content was, we did discover that a niche with a well written piece of content was very effective at growing traffic.
The original grow the pot contest was a big experiment for us. We developed some technology to seed under represented topics. Then we wanted to incentivize authors to do their best to create useful information on them.
From here it gets even more interesting. A few authors were what we consider very successful at writing on these topics and generating traffic. Other authors would write on the exact same topic, but not do nearly as well even though they appeared to be well written. My conclusion was that there is a style element that search engines seem to prefer. Your writing has that "Style". So does Robin's that's effective at driving search traffic. Even though, you can read your hubs and they "feel" totally different than Robins. But if you were to write on a topic from the idea bank and so was Robin, the chances are the two of you would get much more traffic than if Jimmy or I wrote on the topic.
So, I'm not sure how to capture this, but Style is a significant factor today when it comes to driving traffic.
Really enjoyed your article. You can always tell a good writer from another when he engages his audience, which you've certainly done with me. I personally have always had a flair for english and writing since I was a child and thoroughly enjoy writing and reading. I can say without a doubt that this was a very interesting article!
Good work!
I am now a fan!

Linda Smith 1 - thanks for visiting and for pointing out that the "She Told Me" site now charges for posting on it. I have received some emails to that effect and, as a result am no longer posting on that site. I have also removed the reference to it from this Hub.
