Eastern Practices Were Popular in the 1970s

March 4, 2010

I first heard about Reiki some time back in the late 1970s through some mentions of it in magazines or newspapers. This was the decade in which there was considerable interest in Eastern philosophy, religion and medical practices.

The Beatles played a role in this through their brief association with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi the leader of the Transcendental Medication or TM movement.

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi had been introducing and establishing TM throughout the world before the Beatles came on the world scene and the first meeting between the Beatles and the Maharishi took place in Wales. However, the Beatles association with TM gave the movement a big boost.

President Richard Nixon was another big factor in the growing interest in Eastern practices. Arriving in China on July 8, 1971, the day before then National Security Adviser to President Nixon, Henry Kissinger was New York Times columnist James Reston.

Relations were beginning to thaw between the U.S and People's Republic of China and American reporters were starting to visit that nation years of no relations between the two nations. Kissinger was on a secret diplomatic mission to arrange the 1972 visit by President Nixon to China.

While in China, James Reston became ill with appendicitis and, following the removal of his appendix, was treated with acupuncture.

Upon his return home, Reston wrote an article for the New York Times about his experience which generated a lot of interest in acupuncture in the medical community.

I, Too, Become Interested in Things from the East

Like many other people, especially other youth of my generation, I was influenced somewhat by these things.

My younger brother introduced me to yoga and meditation which I have practiced off and on since then.

Other friends introduced me to herb teas many of which I have continued to drink and enjoy over the years although more for their taste than their medicinal qualities.

I Dismiss Reiki at First

However, Reiki, from what little I had read about it, never made sense. It didn't help when a priest who was assigned temporarily to the parish I belonged to and who I worked with on a few projects and became friends with during that period told me that he was training as a Reiki practitioner.

I listened politely and feigned interest as he excitedly explained some of the principles of Reiki to me but this only served to confirm my earlier conclusion that this was a passing fad with no basis in reality.

Years later my son Victor, who had been studying Taekwondo since he was ten or twelve and who had worked his way up to black belt status mentioned that his teacher had become a Reiki master and was expanding his training business to include Reiki training.

Victor told me that he had accepted an offer from his instructor to take the training in exchange for his help teaching some of the Taekwondo classes for younger children.

While I didn't have any faith in Reiki I saw no harm in encouraging Victor to explore his new area of interest. As he studied, he talked about it, I listened and learned more but still didn't think of it.

Massage I could understand, but I couldn't see how holding hands close but not touching the subject's body could accomplish anything.

Victor Makes Some Pain Subside Using Reiki & I Begin to Reconsider

Then I pulled a muscle in my back working in the yard one day and Victor offered to give me a Reiki treatment. I had lost the heating pad during our recent move and preferred to lay in bed rather than going out to get another one so I figured it couldn't hurt.

I took my shirt off and lay on my stomach and let Victor go to work on me. After a bit, I started to feel some heat on my back and the pain began to subside somewhat. The pain didn't abate entirely but I was able to get a good night's sleep and everything was fine within a day or so.

Sometime later my oldest son was in a serious automobile accident and, among other things, had to have hip surgery. Upon his release from the hospital he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility for therapy before being released. While in the rehab facility he some sort of a relapse that sent his temperature and blood pressure up causing him to be transferred by ambulance to a the emergency room of a nearby hospital.

He was about the only patient in the ER that evening but the doctor was busy and the staff refused to do anything other than monitor his condition until the doctor came. David was in a considerable pain and kept asking for some pain killers but was denied.

Finally Victor offered to try Reiki on him and was able to get the pain to subside temporarily until the doctor came and examined David and then allowed the staff to administer some pain killers.

As to the effectiveness of Reiki, I can't say.  Its effect on both my son David and me may have been due more to the power of suggestion than the theories behind Reiki.  I do know that the heat I felt on my back was real and it was hotter than Victor's hands so it wasn't being transferred from his hands.

Would I seek help from a Reiki practitioner in place of a traditional medical doctor?  No.  However, I might try Reiki first before turning to a pain killer if I ever need that as I am very cautious about taking medicines unless I am convinced they are really needed.
Of course, if I ever feel the need, I can always have Victor try Reiki and if that doesn't help I can then pay a doctor for a more traditional treatment.

great information here. experiences are truly what make something wonderful. at first it was also hard for me to believe in energy, due to the fact i was not teachable. now on the other hand i am truly in love with Reiki and its use.

It was interesting to hear this from the perspective of someone who is not totally immersed in reike. A friend told me about a monthly spirituality group she goes to and that the leader does reike, so I became interested. Sometimes when you look into something at first it can be overwhelming to hear it from someone who lives and breathes whatever it is you're learning about. Anyway, thanks for your obviously genuine opinion. I might go with my friend to this group.

My wife is a believer and I must admit I wish I were. However to say I am a non believer in Reiki would also be untrue. I guess it is something to remain open minded about and one of those practices where personal reccomendations are even more important for those practicing it.

Congrats Chuck & Chika! This is a great hub, it has helped me to understand Reiki a little better. I will definitely have to put this on my list of things from the East to learn more about and to experience. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Chuck, thanks for a great write-up on this topic. I have been practising Reiki sine 2005 and have been a Master since 2008. I know Reiki works, and I know that you can improve its effectiveness through certain practices. Yet I still do not know what it is. Looking forward to your other hubs - I haven't had time to read them all!

The mind is a powerful thing and many people can think themselves into being sick so could you also not think your self well? If you believe in a treatment it will help you. How many stories are there of people who should have died but refused to and survived to live another day. I believe it was Henry for who once said "If you think you can or think you can't, you are right".

Good hub, I like your idea of trying it first before taking pain killer and use the pills as a back up.

Good Luck on 30-30

Nan Myatt - I remember Nixon and the opening of China. I also remembered Henry Kissenger's two secret trips and reporter James Reston's appendix operation and treatment with acupuncture later.

I started researching that angle but it was too much to include so I decided to put it into a separate Hub which I am still researching.

I thought and some web postings I found thought Reston's appendix operation occurred while he was traveling with Nixon on his famous trip to China in 1972. But it appeared that reporters were starting to enter China at least after Kissenger's first trip when he supposedly disappeared during a trip to Pakistan and then re-appeared and it became apparent that he had secretly visited China.

James Reston, in his account of his experience in the New York Times on July 26, 1971 of which I have found what appears to be the complete article reprinted on an acupuncture site but have yet to find it in the NYT archives, claims that he arrived in China a day before Kissinger secretly arrived on a second mission on which he made the arrangements for Nixon's famous 1972 trip to China.

In the copy of the article I found, Reston mentions Kissinger but doesn't say if he actually encountered Kissinger during his trip and it is clear from Reston's article that he was not a part of Kissinger's trip (which makes sense as it is not a good idea to bring the press on a secret trip if you want to keep it a secret).

However, some postings on the web claim that Kissinger was the first to mention Reston's encounter with acupuncture in a press conference after his return and that some people ended up thinking that it was Kissinger was the one who had the operation (I vaguely remember that rumor) but it was Reston who had the operation.

As to Nixon, I don't know if he was interested in acupuncture or not but Reston's experience with it became a part of the publicity to come out of the whole affair and that is when the general public suddenly learned about and became interested in acupuncture despite the fact that acupuncture had been practiced in Chinese communities in the U.S. since the 19th century.

Darlene - You started before me so you should be closer to finishing LOL!

I have until next Friday (March 12) to finish and expect to finish the 30 Hubs by then.

As to Reiki it is where they use their hands a centimeter or two from your body but don't touch. And it is supposed to involve a transfer of energy.

While not touching is important to the Reiki procedure it is also important legally because if you touch it can be considered to be a form of massage therapy which is regulated and licensed in many states which means that the Reiki practitioner could face fines and other legal problems for practicing without a license.

I looked at the license issue when I was doing some background research for this piece but didn't have time to fully research and include that issue - that may be written as one of the 15 Hubs I still have to publish before next Friday.

I was interested in seeing an article about Richard Nixon, and his experience. I believe that he opened the door for more relations with China. Kissinger was instrumentsl in getting the whole connection. I have had a transfer of energy to my body in Los Angeles, and can practice the transformation myself. The only thing about Raiki is you lose energy within your body by doing so. I'm not writing about Raiki, it is a complex transformation of energy.

Hi Chuck, good to see you are still hard a work, but I am very clsoe to my 30 articles, it has almost killed me doing it LOL. Now is Raiki where they use their hands without touch you and just send you energy, or is that painful experiance. I have had both but can't remember which is which. Great hub my friend. Check out my book review, this is right up your ally...darski
